How to get from Bilbao to the sanctuary of Loyola

Oct 5, 2026 | Blog

The Sanctuary of Loyola (Santuario de Loyola) is one of the great monumental complexes of the Basque Country and the birthplace of Saint Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits. It stands on the banks of the Urola River, in the Loyola district of Azpeitia, between Azpeitia and Azkoitia, and brings together a Baroque basilica with a monumental dome and the medieval tower house of the Loyola family.

Here’s what to see, how much time to set aside, and how to get there without depending on timetables.

What to see at the Sanctuary of Loyola

The Basilica and its dome

The basilica sits at the center of the main façade. It’s the most important Jesuit church after the Gesù in Rome, it has a striking circular floor plan, and it opened in 1738.

The dome is impressive from outside and even more so from within. It’s crowned by a 15-meter lantern and richly decorated. Since 1758, the high altar has held a silver-plated statue of Saint Ignatius.

The Holy House

This is the spiritual heart of the complex. Ignatius’s birthplace was built in the late 14th century and blends styles, from the solid, windowless stone of the base to the Mudéjar-style brickwork of the upper floors. Inside, you can visit the Chapel of the Conversion, the room where Ignatius recovered after being wounded in Pamplona.

Museum and surroundings

The north wing houses a Museum of Sacred Art with books, liturgical objects, and the altar from the house’s original chapel. The gardens and esplanade are perfect for a quiet stroll before heading into the historic center of Azpeitia, just a few minutes away.

Where it is and how long it takes to get there

The sanctuary is in inland Gipuzkoa, between Azpeitia and Azkoitia. By taxi, private transfer, or your own car, the trip from Bilbao to the Sanctuary of Loyola takes about an hour, with no changes. By bus, the journey stretches to an hour and a half or two hours, with one or two changes along the way. In every case, travel times can vary depending on traffic leaving Bilbao and your exact pickup point.

How to get from Bilbao to the Sanctuary of Loyola by bus

Via Eibar

This is the most common route. From Bilbao’s bus station (Bilbao Intermodal), take a Pesa bus to Eibar. There, connect with a Lurraldebus line to Azpeitia, which stops right by the sanctuary.

Via San Sebastián

The alternative is to head first to San Sebastián bus station and catch the La Guipuzcoana bus (line UK01) from there, which reaches Loyola in just under an hour. It adds more miles and more total travel time.

From Bilbao Airport

There are also buses from Bilbao Airport to Eibar and to San Sebastián, from where you can continue to Azpeitia. It’s doable, but you’ll need to line up the timetables, especially if you’re arriving with luggage or on a weekend.

How to get from Bilbao to Loyola by car

The most direct route leaves Bilbao on the AP-8 toward San Sebastián, then exits toward Azpeitia on the GI-631. Before you decide, keep three things in mind:

  • Tolls: the Gipuzkoa stretch of the AP-8 is a toll road.
  • Parking: it can fill up on public holidays and around July 31, the Feast of Saint Ignatius.
  • Driving: if you’re not from the area, the last few miles of winding valley road call for some care.

This is the most comfortable, direct option. We pick you up at your hotel, your home, or the station and drop you off at the sanctuary’s doors, with no changes, no tolls to work out, and no hunting for parking.

Benefits of a private transfer

  • Door to door: from anywhere in Bilbao and the surrounding area.
  • Fixed price: you know the fare before you set off.
  • Round trip with waiting time: your driver waits during your visit and takes you back to Bilbao.
  • Groups and families: spacious vehicles for pilgrimages, families, or parish groups.
  • 24/7 service: you choose your departure time.

From Bilbao Airport

If you’re flying in, you can go straight from the terminal with our airport transfer. About an hour later, you’ll be at the sanctuary, without passing through the city center.
